I originally recorded this song for a wedding CD compilation for my friends Erik and Jocelyn’s wedding. The compilation was called Happy Together and featured a bunch of artists on their label Lujo Records which released my Bees album and a few Baby Teeth CDs. I wasn’t entirely happy with the original mix, so I decided to remix the thing and put it on the blog.
I first heard “I’m Your Puppet” when I saw Dan Penn play at the Old Town School of Folk Music. He wrote the song and co-wrote a bunch of other hits like “Do Right Woman”, “Dark End Of The Street”, and “Cry Like A Baby.” The show was just him and guitar, real simple. And although he’s not the greatest guitar player, he has a pretty good white soul voice and the songs are so good that I just got swept up.
This to me is a great example of a 60’s radio song that has everything in it’s right place: clever lyrics, good bass line, catchy melody, and background vocals to take the emotion over the top. Jimmy and Bobby Purify have silky smooth voices too. I imagine this made a lot of teenage girls swoon back in its day.

OH, MAN! We love this song! Indeed, James and Bobby Purify have silky smooth voices and I still swoon when hearing it. Pretty good little version yourself, here, too, Pete!
Thanks Jenna! You’ve always been supportive of me. And you have great taste in music, so…cheers!
